A Guide to the European Energy Label for Lighting

At YPHIX, energy efficiency is at the heart of everything we do. That is why our product portfolio consists exclusively of high-quality LED lighting solutions that comply with the latest European requirements for energy performance and ecodesign.

The European Energy Label helps consumers and professionals compare the energy performance of light sources quickly and easily. Thanks to the standardised A-to-G rating scale, the energy efficiency of lighting products is transparent and easy to understand.

What is the European Energy Label?
The energy label for light sources is governed by the European Energy Labelling Regulation (EU) 2019/2015. In addition, lighting products must comply with the Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2019/2020, also referred to as the Single Lighting Regulation (SLR).

Together, these regulations promote the development of increasingly energy-efficient lighting products while providing consumers and businesses with reliable information to make sustainable purchasing decisions.

All applicable YPHIX products fully comply with these European regulations.

Understanding the A to G Energy Scale
The current European Energy Label uses a straightforward A to G classification:

  • A – Most energy efficient
  • B
  • C
  • D
  • E
  • F
  • G – Least energy efficient

Unlike the previous A+, A++ and A+++ rating system, the current scale has been deliberately designed to be more demanding. As a result, only a limited number of products currently achieve an A or B rating, leaving room for future technological improvements.

It is therefore perfectly normal for a modern, highly efficient LED lamp to receive an energy class of C, D, E or even F. This does not mean the product has become less efficient; it simply reflects the stricter assessment criteria introduced by the European Union.

What Information Does the Energy Label Provide?
The European Energy Label includes:

  • The energy efficiency class (A–G)
  • Energy consumption expressed in kWh per 1,000 operating hours
  • A QR code linking directly to the European EPREL database

This enables consumers and professionals to compare lighting products quickly and accurately.

EPREL – European Product Registry for Energy Labelling
All light sources that require an energy label are registered in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL).

By scanning the QR code on the label, users gain access to detailed product information, including:

  • Energy efficiency classification
  • Energy consumption
  • Technical product specifications
  • Manufacturer and model information
  • Ecodesign-related product data

YPHIX registers all applicable products in EPREL and complies with all European labelling and product information requirements.

Why Do Modern LED Lamps Sometimes Have an Energy Label E or F?
One of the most common questions is why a LED lamp that previously carried an A++ rating may now display an E or F energy label.

The answer is simple: the product has not become less energy efficient.

The European Union introduced a completely revised calculation method with significantly stricter performance thresholds. Consequently, many LED products that were previously classified as A++ are now rated D, E or F, while still remaining among the most energy-efficient lighting solutions available.

For an accurate comparison, always consider both the energy class and the energy consumption expressed in kWh per 1,000 operating hours.

Which Products Require an Energy Label?
The Energy Labelling Regulation applies to most light sources placed on the European market.

Certain specialised applications are exempt, including:

  • Emergency lighting
  • Vehicle lighting
  • Certain battery-operated light sources
  • Specific professional applications defined within the legislation

Luminaires with replaceable light sources generally do not carry their own energy label. In these cases, the energy label applies to the individual light source instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my new LED lamp have an Energy Class F?
The current European energy label uses much stricter performance criteria than the previous A++, A+ and A ratings. An Energy Class F lamp may still be one of the most energy-efficient products available today.

How can I recognise the new Energy Label?
The current label features:

  • An A to G energy scale
  • A QR code
  • Energy consumption expressed in kWh per 1,000 operating hours

Older labels used the A++ to E scale and do not include a QR code.

Why doesn't my luminaire have an Energy Label?
If the light source can be replaced by the installer or end user, the luminaire itself generally does not require an energy label. The label applies to the replaceable light source instead.
